NEW YEAR´S IN BARCELONA
New year’s in Barcelona has a number of different options but since it´s a very Catholic country, a lot of people prefer to stay home and be with families, or they have a big family dinner in a restaurant somewhere. For this reason, new year´s isn´t quite as big as in London or Paris maybe, but there are still some options.
Most younger people go to some of the nicer clubs in Barcelona where they have New Years parties. Places like Sutton, CDLC, Sotavento, Opium Mar, Shoko, Catwalk and Elephant will most probably have pretty big parties where the entrance will usually cost between 10-60 Euros and include a drink or two, a party hat and will usually have a guest celebrity (Will I Am, Paris Hilton, David Hasselhof are some of the celebs that have shown up in the past). You can check all of their facebook pages where they will soon be advertising their new year´s parties. Sometimes you can add your name to the guest list which means you can get a discount on cover charge, or sometimes even get in for free (especially for the ladies) Remember that the dress codes are usually quite strict, so make sure you dress the part (avoid t-shirts and sneakers)
Traditionally in Spain, as it turns midnight, people will have 12 grapes and a glass of cava. For every strike of the clock, you eat one grape and this is supposed to bring you good luck for the year ahead. You can use fresh grapes or buy small tins of 12 grapes. This is quite humorous, as you watch your friends trying to stuff their mouths with 12 grapes 12 seconds! Another custom is to wear red underwear, which is also supposed to bring good luck.
Wherever you are in the city, don´t expect to see any big fireworks display since it´s not a custom. However some people will have their own private fireworks. At the Magic Fountain there will also be a celebration which is free to attend and starts at around 23.30 PM, which will last around 45 minutes. There will be a main stage with big screens for the countdown and at 12.00 there will be a fireworks display, as well as a 15 meter “Iron Man” sculpture. It seems that everyone arriving from 22.30 will receive a bag of 12 grapes, however alcohol will not be sold and there will be checks to ensure that people aren´t bringing bottle or glass containers.
Ten minutes’ walk from the Magic Fountain you can find Poble Espanyol, where there will also be a New Year´s party. The party will start at 22:00 and finish at 06:00. Entrance fee is €35 prepaid (€40 at the box office) and includes 4 drinks, your new year´s grapes, novelties and hot chocolate. There will be 3 different spaces, Plaza Mayor (a large open space), the Marquee and the VIP area (which costs €45 prepaid, €50 at the box office) for a limited number of people. If you are unable to buy your ticket online, there are various points across the city where you can buy them in advance. Regardless of what you decide to do on New Year´s, the metro will be running all night and keep in mind that taxis will raise their fares significantly, so only use them in emergency situations.
