QUINOA VEGETARIAN BAR
Choosing to be a vegetarian or vegan in Spain used to be a very daunting endeavor, as the majority of restaurants (regardless of the cuisine) usually have a variety of meat dishes as the main part of their menu. Lately however, there have been more and more vegetarian places opening up in Barcelona, each offering a very unique variety of excellent dishes for all the herbivores out there. Since so many of these establishments are starting to open up, it naturally means that there is more and more competition, resulting in even more innovative dishes and ways to create a unique ambience in each restaurant. One of the smaller establishments, located strategically in the bohemian (almost hipster-like) area of Gracia is called Quinoa, which we had the pleasure of trying this past weekend.
It´s a tiny place with seating for less than 20 people at the most, but it´s size is what ads to its charm. When you enter you are immediately greeted by one of the two Italian owners behind the bar, where some of their delicious vegan cakes and pastries are displayed. This is also where the food is prepared, which is nice since you can see what´s going on in the kitchen. The music was completely befitting the décor, with hits from the 60s – 80s playing and made you feel like you were eating at home! The menu is very basic, yet offers something for everyone. They have different quiches, salads, hummus, and freshly squeezed juices and of course they are famous for their Panini sandwiches here but we decided upon the veggie burgers after reading reviews on Tripadvisor calling them “the best veggie burgers in town!” We also had some nachos and guacamole for a starter which were really tasty and served in a large bowl.
One of the interesting things about Quinoa is the fact that they also offer many locally brewed, as well as less-known international beers and organic beers. We tried an organic “white” beer from German which was really good as well as grapefruit lemonade – also delicious.
The veggie burgers did not disappoint! We´ve tried veggie burgers from many places in Barcelona and these were definitely some of the best. They have a variety of burgers to choose from such as beetroot and millet or lentil and spinach. They are served with the usual lettuce and tomato as well as mustard, but you can choose to add extra toppings such as avocado or onion. The burger also comes with a small glass full of small french fries (just enough to still be considered “healthy”) Everything was extremely well prepared and you could tell that they use very fresh ingredients in their meals.
Even though we were extremely full after our meal we decided we had to give their dessert menu a try and ordered a coconut-carrot cake and their chocolate brownie – both vegan and both exceptionally tasty. Even if you are not vegetarian you should definitely try Quinoa Bar – even if it is only for one of their beers or for a quick coffee and dessert. They do offer the usual menu of the day also which typically consists of a quiche of the day and a salad. Regardless of what you order, the prices are very affordable and definitely a much healthier option that most of the dining options in Barcelona!
