ADOPT A PET IN BARCELONA
PLEASE NOTE: We have been receiving a lot of inquiries from people wanting to buy animals – We do NOT buy/sell/trade animals of any kind and we certainly do not encourage, support or endorse this activity in any way whatsoever. If you are interested in obtaining a pet, please adopt and contact one of the shelters or organisations mentioned in this article and think twice before you purchase a pet.
Today we decided to blog about something a little bit more serious, and of course still connected to life in Barcelona.
Have you noticed the amount people walking their dogs on the streets of Barcelona – according to data from 2008 –3 out of every 10 families have a dog/cat in their house. This is great, as Barcelona is quite a pet-friendly city and we all can agree that having a pet teaches us a lot and makes us much more responsible.
However, the sad and unfortunate side of it (well at least in my opinion) is that the majority of pet owners still prefer to buy a dog or cat than adopt one. According to NGOs, after the crisis the amount of pets abandoned in shelters were especially big. Many of the owners either don`t have the financial resources or in some cases the owners are older people who don`t have the physical possibility to take care of their pet anymore.
I am quite sure this type of cause doesn’t need any reasoning – in the end in sums to one thing: you choose between saving a life and making one dog/cat happy, or you support and encourage the puppy/kitten mill industry which is known to have horrible conditions.
So if you have already decided that the time has come for you to get a pet in Barcelona, here is a list of shelters/organisations where you can do this and make one animal happy! (or more if you have the ability and resources)

I have included only some of the organisations as they are many.
On the website of LiberaONG you can also find a list of alternatives to the zoo – sanctuaries, associations, places where you can see animals in their natural habitat.
One more link for the sea life lovers – you can check the website of CRAM – a Foundation for the conservation and recuperation of marine animals – they also have volunteer programs.
All these organizations are also constantly looking for volunteers and any kind of help – so in case you can`t adopt an animal, but you love animals you can always go and help them as a volunteer.
We are quite lucky to live in Barcelona, there is no doubt about that. But we should remember also to contribute to the community and the city as residents. We are already a part of this community – and adopting or volunteering is only one of the many things we can do to make the city an even happier place.
