HOW TO MEET NEW PEOPLE IN BARCELONA
So here you are – newly arrived in Barcelona. You are excited, the city is amazing, there are plenty of things to do, but you still need to find some new friends to share the city with.
Actually it is pretty easy to make new friends in Barcelona. I don´t know if it is because the city is pretty international and open-minded, or if its the nice climate, but the fact is that it is easy to make friends. At least until now I haven´t met a person who has been lonely or alone in Barcelona. Even the very shy ones manage to find friends quickly.
So here are our tips how to meet new people and make some friends in Barcelona:
1. Bud Up
No matter where you are from in the world, everyone has their own little quirks and peculiar interests that make them unique. But sometimes this can be a little debilitating if you move to a new city or country and you are struggling to meet or find other people who share your uniqueness. Now there exists a special app that lets you not only find these individuals, but also lets you create events related to your interests that they can join! Whether you´re into 70s Sci-Fi films, stamp collection, bird-watching or even medieval reenactment, you can now easily find others that share your weirdness.
2. Meetup groups
If you haven´t heard of Meetup (even if you are not living in Barcelona), fix this mistake now and check their website. They have meet-up groups all over the world. The idea is to gather people with similar interests, hobbies, people who want to learn, share etc. There are many language exchange groups, sports groups, yoga events, start-up events – this list is endless. Some of the meet-ups have a fee – for the venue for example or in case there is some specific workshop, but most of the events are free to join. You only have to present yourself and confirm your presence at the meet-up.
Internations is a great opportunity to meet expats. You can register for free on the website and if you want to have a complete access to all the events they organize you have to subscribe – the fee is around 6 euros per month. The interface lets you be social – send messages to other people, introduce yourself etc. The events they organize are usually in bars and venues with live music and the people going to the events are of any age and every nationality. It is also a very good platform for advertising your second hand items that you no longer need, ask general question to other expats about things related to living in Barcelona, finding a job or even looking for a place to live!
Couch-surfing is not only about travelling, it is also about meeting people. They have events where you can meet visiting travelers, locals or other expats. For more information about the events in Barcelona you can check their website or the Facebook page Couchsurfing Barcelona Party
5. Erasmus events
The Erasmus community in Barcelona is pretty big, and we completely understand all these students who choose Barcelona to do their exchange. So if you are an Erasmus or an international exchange student you should try some of the Erasmus events – they organize dinners, parties and trips to other parts of Spain.
In many of the expat forums there are also events or people looking for other expats.
7. Welcome to Barcelona meeting
We are starting a small event ourselves. The idea is to gather (initially once or twice per month) with all the recently arrived people in Barcelona. Since many of the expats come here with hundreds of questions about banks, documents, legal status, Barcelona life – we decided to organize our small meet-up where we will try to answer all your questions. The idea is that we share our knowledge (and love) of Barcelona and of course for all of you to meet some new people and socialize over a beer. To join out event click here.
