AQUATIC ENTERTAINMENT IN BARCELONA
BEACH SEASON IN BARCELONA
As of 23 March leading up to 31st May, services on Barcelona´s beaches will begin to be activated for the start of the season! This means that all the beaches between the nearly 5km stretch between San Sebastian and Forum will received surveillance, prevention and public information, as well as entertainment for beach-goers and swimmers.
The process also includes cleaning the sand and water, and the opening of 89 showers and 67 toilets for the convenience of everyone enjoying the beach season. Beach users will also have access to sunbeds and parasols which are operated by the famous chiringuitos, whom are also once again opening their doors for the season. As we have mentioned in a previous article, the chiringuitos have become an integral part of Barcelona culture during the summer months, and is probably the best way to enjoy a cold beer or sangria after work, or on the weekends with some friends. If you have not yet experienced the annual festival of Sant Juan (23 June), these chiringuitos are definitely the best place to do so, with live music, delicious cocktails, and complimentary “coca de San Juan” (a flat piece of cake, typical of this festival).
THE MAGIC FOUNTAIN
Definitely one of the most important (and most popular) attractions of Barcelona is the Magic Fountain. Based at the foot of Montjuic, this magnificent piece of architecture was the brainchild of Carlos Buigas, who submitted the project for the Great Universal Exhibition of 1929, as he felt that the exhibition needed something extraordinary to set it apart from everything else. The plans were approved and within less than one year, 3000 workers brought his dream to reality, giving birth to a new form of art – The art of light.
The project also later gave birth to the four cascades and the large jet, which combined with the lights resulted in the Magic Fountain. This is the only major work of art that combines water, light and color in this manner, and best of all – it´s completely free for all to enjoy.
The “performances” can be enjoyed during the following times :
During Spring – Summer (1st May – 30th September), from Thursdays to Sundays 21.00 – 23.30
During Autumn – Winter (1st October to 30th April) on Fridays and Saturdays from 19.00 – 21.00
There are additional sessions on 25/26 December, and 1st January, as well as on Easter
In a few weeks, the weather is really going to start changing, and those long, hot summer days will be upon us again!
One of the best way to keep the young ones entertained (and get rid of excess energy), is to take them to Illa Fantasia – a very popular waterpark that is located about 40 minutes outside Barcelona, and offers over 20 different water slides and 3 gigantic swimming pools. If going by train, you´ll need take the Renfe train from Sants to Premia de Mar. From there, you can take a shuttle bus which will get you to the park in about 5 minutes.
