FIESTA MAYOR – SITGES
Anyone who´s been living in Barcelona for a while knows Sitges. Even on the international cinema scene, Sitges is extremely well-known for hosting the annual Sitges Film Festival.
Typically people go there for the quaint Catalan village-style architecture and small winding streets, as well as the beautiful beach and amazing restaurants on the promenade. Many people rarely experience Sitges in the same way that the locals do – now is your chance!
As you may already know, all the different neighborhoods in Spain have their own unique Fiesta Mayor, which is a week-long celebration that includes activities for the whole family, and is aimed at bringing together all the members of a community and enjoy each other´s company. Probably the most famous one in Barcelona is the Fiesta Mayor de Gracia, which we attended this past weekend and for which we will post some pictures tomorrow, for those who were unable to attend. The festival in Sitges will start tomorrow and finish on Sunday 25 August. This festival is the largest festival that honors Saint Bartholomeu, who also happens to be the patron saints of Sitges. You can enjoy the Copgrossos (big paper mache heads), Bastoners (stick dances), processions with “Gegants” (giants) and of course the famous Castellers which include building a human tower. Falling in line with Catalan culture, you can also see people dancing the famous Sardana – a popular activity at Catalan get-togethers.
More information about the program and how to get to Sitges can be found on the official website of the Fiesta Mayor de Sitges website
We hope you have a chance to visit it, and remember to look out tomorrow for the photos of Fiesta Mayor de Gracia!
