FILM FAIR and FLAMENCO FESTIVAL
“LOOP” FAIR FOR VIDEO ART
Over the last decade, Barcelona has become one of the most important hubs for video, film and “moving art”, and several fairs, showcases, exhibitions and other events have been born to further grow the interest in this industry. It may have all started because of the annual Sitges Film Festival, or it may just be the fact that Barcelona itself has been the back-drop of so many great films.
“LOOP” which is one of these fairs, started in 2003 and was the first exclusively dedicated to video art. Over the 11 editions that have taken place thus far, it has created a strong community of people that are involved in contemporary art and cinema, and is therefore the most efficient event for artists to promote their film and video to a very specific and specialized audience. The LOOP Awards is an incentive to artists, whereby the most outstanding works are distinguished, as well as that of the most remarkable gallery proposal.
The event is taking place at the Hotel Catalonia Ramblas from 23 – 25 May, however to the public it will only be open on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 from 17h00 – 21h00. More information about the tickets which cost 15 Euros for adults and 10 for students, as well as the program for the screenings can be found on their website.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the “Festival Ciutat Flamenco”. This four day festival is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the dancing, the singing, and the magical guitar that makes Flamenco the famous institution that it is. The festival includes activities such as screenings, concerts, children´s shows and new productions by local dance companies. The 2013 edition is dedicated to the famous Carmen Amaya, who is one of the most celebrated Catalan artists, and who has been called “The greatest Spanish gypsy dancer of her generation.”
If you have not yet experienced the tremendous passion and intense dedication that the flamenco culture is all about, this festival will surely impress and will also allow some insight into a little bit of what the south of Spain is like, in case you haven´t yet had the chance to visit.
The festival is taking place 23 – 26 May at the Mercat de les Flors (Metro “Poble Sec”) and tickets can be purchased from their website, where you can also see more details about the program.
