MARCH AND APRIL EVENTS IN BARCELONA
While most of the rest of Europe is still dark, cold and windy, Barcelona is already slowly starting to show signs of an early Spring – Perfect for recharging your energy levels with some vitamin D! Whether you want to go for a walk on the beach, have a picnic in Parc Ciutadella, or even just spend the evening on your balcony with a glass of wine, it would be hard to find any place better to do so than in Barcelona!
Besides the improved weather and general mood of people, there is a huge variety of festivals coming up in the near future that may be interesting to check out.
BARCELONA BEER FESTIVAL:
The second annual Beer Festival will take place from 8-10 March at the Las Arenas Shopping Mall (Plaza Espanya) on the top floor. Over 150 brewers will get together for this event, of which 55 are Catalan, 25 are Spanish, and the rest are from all over Europe. On Friday 8 March it opens from 14:00 until 23:00. On Saturday and Sunday it will start from 11:00 and end at 23:00 and 21:00 respectively. Although not quite the Spanish equivalent of Oktoberfest, it is an excellent opportunity to sample some of the best beers from Spain.
Known in Spain as “Semana Santa” (Holy Week), it is probably one of the biggest and most celebrated religious events in Barcelona, taking place 24-31 March this year. There will be the usual colorful parades and of course the Mona de Pascua (Easter cake) which everyone should try! Every family has their own special way of preparing it, but its always delicious and a big part of the culture.
Even more popular than Valentine’s Day (in Catalunya) is La Diada de Sant Jordi – around 23 April every year this special day is commemorated by couples exchanging gifts. The guy gives his girl a red rose, and the girl gives her guy a book. Most of central Barcelona is covered with florist’s stands and book stores that are temporarily erected for this event. In English, it is essentially the Feast day of Saint George who slayed a dragon.
LA FERIA DE ABRIL:
The unique and interesting spirit of Andalucia can be enjoyed at Parc del Forum from 26 April – 5 May, where there will be a fairground and a variety of stalls that allow you to experience the music, food and culture of Andalucia. If you are a fan of Flamenco, good food, and just to experience a different side of Spain, this is a definite must-see event!
We will provide some more updated information on these events as they take place, so be sure to check back soon!
