The Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra will be performing at the Consorci de l’Auditori i l’Orquestra (see details here)
This orchestra is one of the oldest in Russia, and its history goes back to the first orchestra of the St Petersburg Imperial Opera Orchestra. Founded in 1783, it covers more than two hundred years!
In 1935 Joseph Stalin changed its name to the Kirov, after Sergei Kirov, the first secretary of the Communist Party in Leningrad, whose 1934 murder by his regime Stalin was attempting to whitewash. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the name was changed back to the Mariinsky in 1992.
Currently, the artistic and general director of the Mariinsky Theatre is the conductor Valery Gergiev and the principal guest conductor is Nikolaj Znaider.
The orchestra will be performing on Friday 11 January 2013 at 20.30 in Hall number 1 (Pau Casals) at the L´Auditori.
