SAN JUAN FESTIVAL & DESIGUAL NIGHT RUN
SAN JUAN FESTIVAL
If you´ve noticed fireworks shops opening all over the city all of a sudden, it is not some weird coincidence. Allow us to explain:
Most probably the most popular of all the festivals in Spain, “Noche de San Juan” is taking place this coming Sunday 23 June and as usual will be celebrated all over the city but mostly on the beaches of Barcelona. The origin of the festival was to celebrate Spanish midsummer’s eve and was named after John the Baptist. Fireworks are the main attraction at this festival and thousands of people having picnics on the beach and enjoying live music, awesome fireworks displays, massive bonfires and enjoying the famous Coca de San Juan.
Fortunately you don´t have to worry about working the following day, as the 24th of June is a public holiday and the metro will be operating all night on Sunday night / Monday morning. The beaches will however close at 06.00. Additional information about the festival can be found on the website
BARCELONA DESIGUAL NIGHT RUN
Desigual have become famous for their publicity efforts such as their Seminaked event where shoppers could enter the shops in their underwear and walk out with free clothing. (Bear in mind this was mid-winter in the freezing cold – they weren´t going to make it THAT easy to score some free clothes!)
This time they´ve chosen to once again make use of the weather and will be hosting the 1st edition of the Barcelona Night Run, taking place on Friday 21st from 22.30 and will cover a distance of 5 miles (just over 8 kilometers) along Barcelona´s beachfront. Nearly 2000 runners have already registered out of the 5000 available places so if you´re interested, head over to their website where you can register. Participation costs 15 Euros
