SANT JOAN, GAMELAB and ENGLISH CINEMA
NIT DE SANT JOAN
WHEN: 23/24 June
WHERE: All over Barcelona but mostly on the beach
WHAT: The annual celebration of Sant Joan
If you have lived in Barcelona for more than a year, you will undoubtedly be familiar with what is going to happen tonight. If you are new to Barcelona, be sure not to miss the festivities as thousands of people descend upon the beaches of Barcelona to see fireworks displays, have Coca de Sant Joan (a flat cake), do their correfoc (fire run) and have a great time listening to DJ´s playing music at the different chiringuitos on the beach. Usually every chiringuito plays different music so you might want to visit each one to find the music you like. The metro will be open all night so you don´t have to worry about how you will get home once you leave at 3:00 AM! We advise you to take your own food and drinks as well as something warm as it can get cold. Also don´t forget to pick up your trash when you leave the beach. You can find more information about the event here.
WHEN: Wed 25 June – Friday 27 June
WHERE: Filmoteca de Catalunya (map here)
WHAT: Videogames conference and expo
This year marks the 10th edition of the annual Gamelab conference which is a Spanish conference and expo. The aim of the event is to help promote growth of business initiatives in Europe – especially those in their early stages. It has grown into one of the most influential events in the game industry in Europe and annually has an audience of over 2000 participants. These include not only the game developers, but also investors, public institution academics, service providers and academics and experts in other digital industries. There will be many great opportunities for networking, learning, sharing ideas and seeing presentations by some of the most influential people in the gaming industry from companies such as Amazon Apps, Microsoft, Sony Online Entertainment and Spanish company Etermax. More information about the event can be found on their website.
WHEN: Mondays to Sundays
WHERE: Various cinemas across Barcelona
WHAT: Cinemas showing movies in Original Version
For many expats moving to Barcelona, it is quite frustrating when watching TV or movies since everything is usually dubbed into Spanish. Fortunately there are a few theaters in the city that do show films in their V.O (Version Original) and with Spanish subtitles. This is great because you can enjoy the film in English but also brush up on your Spanish by reading the subtitles! If the summer heat gets too much and you need a break, head down to one of these cinemas and enjoy a great film in a cool environment and some tasty popcorn. You may already be aware of some of these theaters but in case you aren´t, below is a list of some of them. Click on each one to go their website.
